Of the talent that passed through the 1994 Ultrafilter International Formula Renault Championship, which included the likes of Thomas Erdos and the late Gonzalo Rodriguez, it was Manor Motorsport’s James Matthews that became the man of the moment as he went on to win the 1994 UK title with an incredible eleven wins.
The young Yorkshireman topped off his UK dominance by taking the Formula Renault Eurocup crown in the same season too.
“James was a wonderful driver,” said John Booth, who is now Team Principle at Marussia Virgin F1. “He won 11 races in that season and one of the ones that he didn’t win he collided with a back marker when lapping him. With James he never thought too much about his points situation, he just wanted to go out there and race, he had so much confidence. It was a brilliant year as we won 17 races including the Eurocup races, James was on fire.”
James’s record of eleven race wins in a season was equalled by Fortec’s Alex Lynn last time out at Rockingham. The youngster is hoping to create history this weekend and surpass the record by taking two wins in the penultimate round of the CERTINA Formula Renault 2.0 UK Championship at Brands Hatch.
