The Formula Renault 2.0 UK Championship heads to Norfolk with a quality grid of young drivers hoping to follow in the Formula 1 footsteps of the likes of championship graduates Lewis Hamilton and Paul Di Resta as rounds 11&12 of Britain’s premier manufacturer backed open wheel series gets underway at Snetterton on August 6-7.
After a strong start to the season Fortec Motorsport’s Alex Lynn has taken seven wins so far this term and currently leads the championship by 58 points over Atech Reid GP’s title contender Tio Ellinas.
“The new Snetterton 300 track is very technical and challenging layout but I am hoping to run well there,” says Lynn, who recently visited the Lotus Renault GP team at the European Grand Prix in Valencia as a guest of Lotus Motorsport as a prize for leading the championship standings at the mid-way point of the season.
At Croft Lynn came away with a fifth place finish in the first race followed by a win in the second race and conceived that “in the grand scheme of things, it could have been a lot worse.”
Looking forward to racing on the new Snetterton 300 layout after a second and seventh placing last time out at Croft is Ellinas.
“I came third here in Formula Ford last year,” says Ellinas. “I think that the new 300 track is good and I particularly like the infield section as it is quite technical. I would like to come away with some strong podium finishes this weekend.”
After taking his first victory in the series last time out at Croft, Atech Reid GP’s newcomer Jack Hawksworth will be aiming to step up to the mark again as he closes in on Fortec Motorsport’s Ollie Rowland in the fight for third place in the championship standings.
“I am very confident ahead of this weekend as we went well on the new layout previously in testing,” says Hawksworth. “I think that realistically we can go there this weekend and aim to be on the podium in both races, I would really like to push Lynn.”
The championships grid has also been boosted this weekend as Ed Jones joins the field fresh from racing in the Intersteps championship along with 2010 championship frontrunner Will Stevens and Felix Serralles who have both been pushing hard in the Formula Renault Eurocup this year.
Formula Renault 2.0 UK Championship action gets underway with two qualifying sessions at 10:30 and 16:30 on Saturday 6th August and two races on Sunday, with race 1 at 09:45 and race 2 at 16:10.
