Lynn Grabs Second Thruxton Win

Fortec’s Alex Lynn cruised to victory by over six seconds in today’s Formula Renault 2.0 UK Championship race at the Thruxton Circuit in Hampshire.  Tio Ellinas (Atech Reid GP) finished third ahead of an impressive Oliver Rowland (Fortec), who again took honours in the Graduate Cup.

For the second time this weekend it was Alex Lynn who stood on the top step of the podium. The Fortec driver was unstoppable in race two; making a good getaway from pole position and converting it into his fourth win of the season. Lynn again set the fastest lap of the race (1min 09.808secs on lap 7), but was unable to match the lap record he set yesterday.

“It’s been fantastic,” said Lynn. “I’ve got nothing to complain about from this weekend and I think I’ve made my point. The car was fantastic and everything went to plan. I can’t wait to get to Oulton Park.”

Lynn’s margin of victory was aided by an unforced mistake on the fourth lap from nearest challenger, Manor Competition’s, Jordan King, who sprinted away from the start to get into second place.

It was a schoolboy error,” said King. “I downshifted too quickly for the chicane, locked the rear wheels and spun. It’s not a mistake I’ll be making again. It’s a real shame as my speed was good all weekend. I was quick in qualifying and should have had pole for Saturday’s race and the start of today’s race showed that I could have been challenging for the win.”

Ellinas leaves Thruxton with a pair of second places and the championship points lead with 171 to Lynn’s 166.

“I only drove here for the first time in the dry this weekend so it’s a fantastic result,” said Ellinas. “I’ve had a podium finish in every race this season so far and feel like I’m learning and improving every time I’m out in the car.”

Thruxton marked further improvement for Racing Steps Foundation backed Fortec driver, Oliver Rowland. The leader of the Graduate Cup continued his weekend long pursuit of Lynn and Ellinas, and two third place finishes see the Yorkshire based driver in good shape as the championship heads to Oulton Park in a month’s time.

“It was good to get a podium from sixth on the grid,” he said.” I managed to get second then made a few mistakes, letting Tio past. Josh kept me under pressure at the end, especially as I was struggling on the straight as my front left tyre was scrubbing, but on the whole I’m reasonably happy the weekend.”

Elsewhere, Josh Hill had a positive end to the weekend. After a difficult day yesterday, which saw Hill clash with team-mate Alice Powell at the chicane; Hill avoided trouble and picked up a season best result of fourth, just four tenths behind the hard charging, Rowland.

“I could see that Rowland was pushing hard and his tyres were not at their best or he was making mistakes,” said Hill, “but there are only two overtaking opportunities here and he was defending well. I was ready to pass if there was an opportunity, but I also wanted to make sure I got points on the board from a finish, so I’m happy with fourth from today.”

While Hill’s fortunes improved, Manor Competition team-mate Alice Powell received more bad luck in race two. Despite starting from second on the grid, Powell’s race wouldn’t even last a lap.

“I didn’t make the best of starts,” she explained. “Oliver Rowland got alongside me and there was some contact, but then Pedro Pablo Calbimonte came out of nowhere and went straight into my side. After yesterday’s incident I think it must have been ‘take out Alice’ weekend!”

The championship now has a four-week break before returning again at the fast and flowing Oulton Park circuit in Cheshire on June 4-5.
